Our fellow bloggers at MotorBeam, has spotted Ssangyong Rexton in the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The car did not have a single piece of camouflage and sported Nashik number plates. It has been spotted multiple times across India. Indian auto major Mahindra acquired the Korean car maker Ssangyong last year and since then Ssangyongs are being tested in India. Mahindra will bring the Rexton in India after it launches the SsangYong Korando SUV.
The Korando will be the first Ssangyong model that will enter the Indian car market. The Rexton II is the next to follow. The Korando has a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 175bhp and 360Nm of torque. The 5-seater Korando would be an ideal alternative to the Ford Endeavour and the Tata Safari Merlin.
The Rexton is a typical old-school SUV based on the tried and tested mechanicals of the first-generation Mercedes M-Class and was styled by Giorgietto Giugiaro’s Italdesign studio. At present, the second generation of the Rexton is on sale and comes with an option of 5 or 7-seat. It is an off-roader and has a permanent 4×4 drive, which torque is supplied as per demand.
Coming to the technical specifications, it gets a 5-cylinder 2.7-litre common rail diesel engine which produces 184 PS of power and 402 Nm of torque. This comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and even an option of 5-speed automatic transmission that is designed by Mercedes-Benz. Saangyong Rexton will compete with the likes of the Chevrolet Captiva, Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Mitsubishi Outlander.
