The Tata Tigor is one such model which in many ways is struggling to find its feet when it comes to bringing sales numbers for the company. This is despite boasting of an impressive value for money package headlined by a ton of features. Keeping that in mind, Tata Motors could well be giving it a much required shot in the arm with a turbocharged petrol variant of it coming soon.
Recently, a test mule of the compact sedan was spied in its Turbo iteration. This has expectedly led to speculations of a launch soon, possibly in the coming year. If this does turn out to be true, the Tigor Turbo will co-incide with a slew of models coming from the Tata Motors stable in 2021.
For those who are not aware, Tata Motors have planned to launch quite a few products in the market next year, which include the HBX micro-SUV, Gravitas premium SUV and the much awaited return of the Hexa. Coming back to the test mule, it was recently spotted undergoing testing on the streets of Mumbai. At present, no other manufacturer offers their compact sedan with a Turbo variant and Tata Motors could well pioneer the class with the Tigor Turbo.
It will receive the 1.2 litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor seen on the Nexon and to be seen on the Altroz soon. However, Tata Motors could slightly de-tune the motor in order to give the car a balance when it comes to its power output. It is said that the Tigor Turbo could produce power figures in excess of 110 BHP along with 140 Nm of torque.
It will come mated to options of a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT transmission. It is to be noted that the Tigor is no stranger to carrying a higher power output underneath its hood. Earlier, Tata Motors used to sell the Tigor with a much powerful JTP variant.
The Tigor JTP, with its BS-IV engine used to generate 112 BHP of power and 150 Nm of torque. Unfortunately the JTP variant of the compact sedan was phased out on the back of its poor sales numbers and lack of significant demand. As for the changes, we can expect minor ones on the exterior to distinguish it from the normal variant of the Tigor.
There could also be changes running to the inside as well, which will give it a more sporty feel overall. Tata Motors could well price the turbocharged variant of the Tigor in excess of Rs.10 lakh by the time it gets launched. As mentioned earlier, the Tigor Turbo could create a class of its own within the compact sedan space leading to the rest following suit some time or the other.
