Tata Aria goes out of production to make way for the Hexa

Home-grown car manufacturer, Tata Motors has silently stopped the production of Tata Aria at its manufacturing plant in Pune, Maharashtra. The replacement set-up for the Aria is the new Hexa Concept, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March-2015.

According to our good friends at MotorBash, Tata Motors has not manufactured a single unit of Aria this-month. Even last-month in August, the company hasn’t produced a single unit of Aria, which means the first unsuccessful premium product is discontinued from the market. Tata Motors has given-up ‘Aria’ moniker after a long struggle to keep it floating.

In terms of sales, Tata Motors has produced 16 units of the Aria in July-2015 and produced a total of 60 units this financial year, in comparison to 1136 units manufactured last year till September-2014. Reportedly, the company managed to sell only 3 units of flagship Tata model in September-2015 collecting the total sales tally for this financial year to 112, in comparison to 1001 units in the same period last-year.

Tata Motors unveiled the Tata Xover (pronounced crossover) at the 75th Geneva Auto Show in the year 2005 and the company had high expectations from this crossover. It has been launched as the Tata Aria in 2010 and most of its body design remained unchanged on the production model except for the grill, headlamps and minor cosmetics.

The company had worked hard for the Aria project with unseen level of progress in departments of quality, features, technology and driving experience. However the efforts to make it work have proved useless as the biggest problem with this crossover was the pricing. Tata Aria is so far the costliest car in the Tata’s line-up and that disadvantage made Aria the least and slowest seller in the Tata’s line-up.

Now the second generation Aria is coined Hexa, it remains to be seen how well this new strategy works in favour of Tata! This segment is currently being ruled by Toyota Innova and Mahindra XUV500, hence these 2 will be the prime competitors for the new Hexa.

Tata Hexa Crossover – Aria-based version this year

Tata Motors confirms the arrival of the Aria-based Hexa Concept which was previewed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show for launch in India later this-year.

Like the Bolt and Zest, the Hexa will be the re-skinned Tata Aria with different moniker. It might adapt Tata’s ConnectNext and DesignNext strategy, which means the interior is redesigned and includes a touchscreen infotainment system sourced from Harman. Other changes like the 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, individual AC vents and captain’s chairs for the second row are expected.

Design-wise, the Hexa showcased at Geneva had a new-look Tata grille with a thick brushed aluminium lining, flatter bonnet, blackened projector headlamps, LED DRLs, restyled bumpers with brushed aluminium skid plates, body cladding, blackened B, C and D-pillars, wraparound LED tail lamps, and a new tail gate with a thick brushed aluminium strip running across it, connecting the two tail lamps. Like the Aria, the Hexa too comes with dual exhausts.

Powering the Hexa will be a same 2.2-litre four cylinder VARICOR diesel engine, however, the power and torque outputs is likely to be increased to 154 bhp and 400 Nm respectively. Apart from this, the Hexa will also receive a 6-speed manual transmission, making it the first ever Tata car to feature 6-speed gearbox. The reports further suggest the addition of a GMPT (General Motors Powertrain) developed automatic transmission to make debut on the Hexa crossover.

GrounDDesigns Pune modifies Tata Aria

Grounddesigns is a Pune based company that works on modification of cars. The company has recently modified the Tata Aria. The car has been given a significant makeover. Though the modified version does not appear appealing but it surely has a lot of details which one can examine by giving the car a closer look.

Grounddesigns has completely replaced the radiator grille with a new design. The upper section has twin recesses forming a nose while the lower section appears to give the impression of a smile. A satin brown finish has been given to the grille along with mesh treatment to the central section. The logo of the modification company is positioned in the middle. On both the flanks of the bonnet, opposing “C” made of plastic have been placed.

The bumper has also been completely revamped. It now features many surfaces and layers. It also houses slim but wide twin continuous air dams and round fog lamps on each side. There is a strip of LEDs inside each fog lamp. From a distance, the car looks well finished, but when you take a closer look you will notice large gaps between the bumper and the headlamp on the left side.

Just like the front bumper, the rear one has also been redesigned completely. Its lower portion is now surrounded by claddings all along its length. The area under the crossover’s central pillar now feature angular fins and footboards have also been added. The place where the registration place is positioned has also been redesigned. Grounddesigns have tinted the tail lamps with same shade as the body color. As per the images available on internet, the alloy wheels appear different in one picture as compared to the alloy wheels in the other snapshots. However, it is likely that it features brown 10-spoke angular alloys.

Recent Launches - Cars Tata Motors Whats New ?

Tata Aria gets one last facelift before all-new model, priced at Rs. 9.95 lakh

new-tata-aria-2014-front2014 Tata Aria facelift

Home-grown car manufacturer, Tata Motors earlier this-week launched the facelift version of the Aria MPV without much fanfare. Looks wise, the Tata Aria hasn’t really been known as vehicle that reinvents itself. The cosmetic changes offered in exteriors include Black Bezel headlamps and clear lens tail lamps with a host of decals. On the inside, the Tata Aria facelift gets some updates in the form of better quality and added gadgetry while seating is the same in a 2+3+3 format.

The base variant facelift Tata Aria, Pure LX 4×2 bestows ABS+EBD, while the second variant Pleasure 4×2 is equipped with rear wash wiper, reverse parking sensors, steering mounted controls, steering mounted controls, front airbags and ABS+EBD. The top end variant Prestige 4×4 is blessed with high quality leather upholstery, reverse camera, satellite navigation, 360 watt Harman Infotainment system supporting connectivity with Blue 5 Bluetooth, climate control, cruise control, electric folding ORVMs, side and curtain airbags, ABS+EBD+ESP and traction control.

Under the hood of the 2014 Aria is the same 2.2-litre diesel power plant, but it has been re-tuned for improved performance. The engine now produces 150 ps/148 hp of power (10 more than the outgoing model) at 4000 rpm, while the peak torque of 320 Nm kicks in at a lowly 1500-3000 rpm. The facelift Aria also delivers enhanced fuel efficiency figure of 15.05 kmpl, while the earliest version of Aria delivered an average of 13.5 kmpl.

new-tata-aria-2014-feature2014 Tata Aria facelift – Features

The Aria facelift that takes on the Mahindra XUV 500 and Toyota Innova, is priced at Rs. 9.95 lakhs for the Pure LX 4×2, Aria Pleasure 4×2 is priced at Rs. 12 lakhs while top of the range Aria Pride 4×4 is priced at Rs. 14.74 lakhs (all ex-showroom Delhi). In terms of pricing, the 2014 Aria is at a good stand-point and is close to the Innova, but even with more features on tap, beating the Innova is difficult. But seen with some major changes and added features makes the 2014 Aria is better value than before.

According to our good friends at MotorBeam, the Aria is all-set to get the next-gen model which will be launched as early as next-year. As per the source, the design of the next-generation Tata Aria will be inspired from the Range Rover (headlights and tail lights are very similar to the Range Rover) and the crossover will borrow heavy styling cues from Land Rover’s flagship vehicle. This is sure to make the new Aria very attractive and the vehicle will also get a new name to get rid of the fact that it has been called a ‘Bloated Indica’ which always ruins the reputation of an otherwise great vehicle.

Land Rover to help Tata Motors build better cars, including the next-gen Safari and Aria

Tata cars with Land Rover design – FrontView

Land Rover’s vehicles are among the best in the world today, with awesome design features and performance to match, whereas its parent company, Tata’s SUV’s are lagging behind in technology, design and performance as well giving reason for their low sales figures. It’s hard to figure out why, because Tata now owns Land Rover and can very well use inputs and technology from Land Rover to make their SUVs better, but they didn’t do so till now. However, word has now finally come out that, Tata and Land Rover will be working together on two vehicles which will sport the Tata badge, but most of the technology is expected to come from Land Rover’s end.

The first of these will be an SUV which will be developed almost entirely by Land Rover, the architecture, the performance, the technology, the underpinnings and even some of the design cues are expected to come from Land Rover. This particular SUV will be priced in the range of 10-15 lakh rupees and guarantees to be a great success for Tata in terms of sales numbers.

On the other hand, there is not much word about the second vehicle, though it is expected to be a crossover, as the crossover segment is touted to be the best segment in the automobile world. The report further suggests that, the next-gen Safari and Aria too would have some Land Rover influence in the design aspect.

Only time can tell how this new venture will turn out to be and for it to be a greater success, Tata will have to improve their after sales service facilities in order to accommodate the new changes in technology. And if this turns out to be successful, Land Rover can also consider using Tata for low-cost production of some of its entry-level cars in order to reduce production costs.

‘Aria is a Misunderstood Concept’ – likely to be removed from Tata Motors line-up

Tata Aria facelift

Tata Motors had launched ‘Aria’ back in 2010 in the Indian market at a huge price tag of 15 lakhs INR. Since its launch Aria has not obtained the required decent sales in the market but instead it was a flop show from Tata Motors. In order to overcome this, Tata also added frills; launched price cut variants, offered huge discounts etc… All these did not attract customers towards Aria.

A few persons close to the development of Tata’s new SUVs revealed that Tata is evaluating options for Aria and accepted that Aria is a ‘misunderstood concept’ in the Indian market as per the reports obtained from Livemint. Keeping this in mind, Tata Motors is likely to discontinue Aria when new SUV’s from Tata would be launched in 2015.

As a result, Tata Aria would be continued at least for a couple of years in the Indian market. The recent spy shots obtained by our friends at Motor Bash also reveal that Tata is also preparing an Automatic transmission Aria which is at least expected to be developed with the help of recently acquired Land Rover. Stay tuned at BharathAutos to know whether the upcoming Aria would at least win the hearts of the customers in the Indian market or whether Tata Motors would say ‘good bye’ from its line-up.

Spied – 2012 Tata Safari Merlin on a trial-run!

2012 Tata Safari Merlin spied

2012 Tata Safari Merlin is here, spied once again, thanks to an amateur photographer from The Tata Merlin SUV was spied last month too by our reader Pavan Rao, although we all know what the final product will look like as we have already brought you the uncamouflaged images of the Merlin on a couple of occasions.

It will draw inspiration from the Land Rover, the Merlin sports a flatter front end, and a different read without the spare wheel. The engine is the enduring 2.2 litre DICOR turbo diesel unit affording 140 Bhp and 320 Nm. Interiors are pruned with premium looks with an uncanny resemblance to those of the recently launched TATA Aria. One can expect a 2 wheel and a four wheel drive option but an automatic gearbox seems unlikely. Other features include ABS, EBD and airbags which are the default safety apparatus on the Merlin.

The Tata Safari Merlin is another model derived out of Tata Motor’s innovative marketing strategy. The Vista evolved from the Indica, the Manza from the Indigo, the Grande from the Sumo and now Merlin from the Safari. Both the Safari and Merlin will be sold separately, with the Merlin filling the void between the Safari and Aria.

Spied – Tata Aria with Automatic Transmission in Pune

Tata Aria Automatic

Recently launched Mahindra XUV500 in the Tata Aria’s feature segment has created more troubles for already troubled Aria sales, with a lower priced product with better features. We said earlier that Tata Aria Automatic version on Tata Motors cards. A month ago Carwale said testing has already begun for this new automatic variant in India and in UK.

Now we have the proof, thanks to Anything-On-Wheels for the spy picture of automatic variant of the Aria caught in Pune. The ‘On Test’ Aria was spotted at Pimpri and had no badges to distinguish it from the manual counterpart.

The Aria Automatic will be the very first autobox from Tata Motors and this upgrade is expected to take place in conjunction with Tata’s British subsidiary Jaguar-Land Rover. The Aria Automatic will be more expensive than the top-end 4X2 Aria.

It’s expected to launch soon in India. There is no official timeline, but we expect that it should hit Indian roads before the first quarter of 2012. It is the perfect feature to be introduced on the Aria because Mahindra is said to be considering an automatic version of its latest winner Mahindra XUV 500, but it’s still long way. What do you think, will an Automatic variant boost some life into the Aria’s sales?

Spied – Tata Safari Merlin undisguised front snap

Tata Safari Merlin - FrontView

For the first time, the undisguised images of the new Tata Safari Merlin are out in the open. While the earlier picture which revealed the rear three quarters’ view of the car suggested a striking similarity with design and body of the current generation car, the front view too is clearly reminiscent of the current gen model. Now, a forum member from has spotted an uncovered Merlin in a parking lot.

The Tata Safari Merlin or just Tata Merlin will be positioned above the Safari but below the Tata Aria. The current Safari will continue to sell as it is, while the Merlin will be a new model. Tata Motors strategy seems a bit weird, they want to evolve new models out of nowhere, just like they did with the Indica – Vista and Indigo – Manza.

Styling seems to be heavily inspired by the big brother the Range Rover’s, but hasn’t been executed well enough. Changes too are visible though, the dual chrome plated exhaust and silver door handles. Tail lamp looks taken from Force traveller. The spare wheel on the new model has gone below the chassis leaving behind a clean tail-gate. Look at side cladding for the fuel-lid to open; did they realize it at the last moment? Lol…

Tata Safari Merlin - RearView

Powered with the same 2.2 litre DICOR engine but will get a dual mass flywheel and a better gearbox (à la Tata Aria), the maximum power expected is 140 Bhp @ 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of about 320 Nm @ 1700 rpm. New safari seems to have a similar profile and dimensions as the old, at least on the exteriors.

The interiors and fit & finish departments are where the Merlin SUV aims to be head and shoulders above the current Safari and from what we’ve gathered, the Merlin’s interiors are expected to be as good as the Tata Aria, which is a nice thing indeed. The Merlin will be priced at least a lakh above the existing variants of the Tata Safari and will gun straight for the Mahindra XUV500.

Tata Safari Merlin SUV scheduled for end-September

Tata Safari Merlin SUV - RearView

Indian car market is showering with many car launches in the month of August, there are a few launches slated during the next month as well.  Tata Motors also wants to mark its presence and is all set to usher its own challenger in the Indian premium SUV space with the Tata Safari Merlin SUV.

Force Motors launched the Force One SUV recently, which is going to be followed by the launch of Mahindra W201 World SUV shortly. Then next up on the cards is the launch of Tata Motor’s Tata Safari Merlin that is expected to hit the Indian roads by end-September.

However, the Tata Motors intends to drop the ‘Safari’ out of the name to differentiate between the two SUVs in the consumer’s point of view. Tata Motors intends to launch their Tata Merlin SUV to position it as a stiff competitor of Mahindra W201 (World SUV). Apparently, Tata Merlin is going to be an upgraded version of the Tata Safari. The Tata Safari Merlin price is likely to be placed slightly over Rs 10 lakhs.

Drawing inspiration from the Land Rover, the Merlin sports a flatter front end, and a different read without the spare wheel. The engine is the enduring 2.2 litre DICOR turbo diesel unit affording 140 Bhp and 320 Nm. As for the interiors of the Tata Merlin, the SUV is likely to mimic the looks of Tata Aria crossover and believed to be a class apart from the Tata Safari’s interior looks.

The Tata Merlin SUV is expected to come loaded with many additional features to include Airbags, ABS and EBS. The Merlin SUV is expected to be available both in 2 wheel drive and four wheel drive options although an automatic gearbox is still not a part of the equation.
