American car manufacturer, Ford unveiled the production-version of the next-generation Ford Ka hatchback (Ford Figo in India) in Brazil, which will go on-sale in July this year after the completion of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Based on the Ka concept showcased in November last year, the production version gets a couple of slight design changes.
Earlier this-year at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, Ford India also unveiled the concept version of Figo sedan, which would be a sub four-meter-sedan. According to the trusted source, the company is all-set to launch the hatchback version first by the beginning of next-year. While the next-generation Figo will be joined by a compact sedan later in 2015.
The 2015 Ka/Figo is based on the current Figo’s platform, which was in turn based on the old Fiesta’s architecture. The Ka manages to retain many exterior features that were showcased on the Ka Concept. Some slight changes on the production-spec version compared to the concept are different mirror elements and a smoked look, and the missing chrome from the front bumper. The side and rear profile on the other hand remain the same as the concept.
Mechanically, the Brazilian-spec Ford Ka will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder ECOnetic engine that runs on petrol and ethanol. The engine produces 85 HP of power at 6500 RPM and 105 Nm of torque at 4500 RPM, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Ford Ka with the new engine is capable of returning a fuel economy of 8.9 kmpl on ethanol and 15.1 kmpl on petrol in Brazil.
In India, we expect the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine to be offered only in the higher-spec variants as the engine is expensive to manufacture, while the base petrol versions will be powered by the 1.2-litre unit. The 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel motor could be replaced by the 1.5-litre TDCi motor from the Fiesta in a de-tuned avatar.
