It’s no secret that Mahindra are working on a compact SUV for the Indian market. Codenamed the S201, this sub-4 metre SUV will be based on the SsangYong Tivoli sold in various Asian markets. The S201 was spotted recently undergoing intense testing.
It was clicked alongside the XUV700 premium SUV, which is slated for launch during the upcoming festive season. The S201 will be Mahindra’s third representative in the compact SUV segment, alongside the TUV300 and the Nuvosport. This compact SUV is scheduled for launch in early 2019.
Unlike the previous two, who come with a ladder-frame equipped chassis, the S201 will have a monocoque one. Mahindra will launch the S201 in a 5-seater version first, followed by a 7-seater version later next year. The S201 is expected to come high on the features list as well.
These include a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse parking sensors, leather seats and also a sunroof as well. As far as safety is concerned, the S201 will have dual airbags, ABS with EBD, cruise control and ESPN. Mahindra will offer the S201 in both petrol and diesel engine options.
There has been no confirmation about the specifications of the engines but expect it to arrive sooner than later. The petrol engine will be a 1.2-litre motor which will be delivering a likely output of 140 BHP of power. On the other hand, there will be a 1.5-litre diesel engine which will be producing about 125 BHP of power.
It will be offered in both manual and automatic gearbox options when launched. Expect prices to start from Rs.6 lakh and go all the way to Rs. 12 lakh for the top trims. The S201 will have its rivals in the form of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport and the Tata Nexon.
