X167 Mercedes-Benz GLS now on-sale in India at Rs. 99.90 lakh

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the third-generation GLS (codename X167) in India. The SUV is available in two versions-GLS 400d and GLS 450. Both models are priced at Rs. 99.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mercedes-Benz bestowed the GLS moniker to its largest SUV, it’s been billing it as the “S-Class of SUVs” – even though the car was really just a bigger GLE with an extra row of seats.

The new GLS is based on the High Modular Architecture (MHA). It’s longer and wider than the outgoing model and also has a longer wheelbase. It measures 5,207 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width and 1,823 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 3,135 mm. The exterior is updated with revamped LED headlights and tail lights. The car is riding on 21-inch alloy wheels and has air suspension.

On the inside, the GLS comes with three rows of seats, two 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster, and a touchscreen infotainment head panel, which now comes with the MBUX system. It’s got voice commands and motion control. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, 5-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging for front and rear passengers and back seat entertainment.

Like the GLE, the GLS comes with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with an optional Interior Assistant gesture control system.

The GLS 450 is powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder petrol engine with a 48 V mild-hybrid system. The combustion engine produces 362 BHP and 500 Nm, while the additional 21 BHP and 250 Nm are available for short duration via the EQ Boost feature. The GLS 400d is powered by a 2.9-litre, 6-cylinder diesel engine consisting of 362 BHP and 700 Nm. Both engines are coupled to a 9-speed automatic transmission and come with all-wheel drive.
