It is been reported that Volkswagen are readying to launch the next generation of their existing models, namely the Polo, Vento and the Ameo to India. Likewise, sister brand Skoda are also lining up the next generation of their mid-size sedan, the Rapid for the market. We can expect all of them to be on sale here by 2021.
This is because new models from both the automakers are scheduled to arrive here in 2021. So, we can expect some minor refreshes along with the next generation of these models. Recently, the Volkswagen group revealed its ‘India 2.0’ vision, which will result in more affordable offerings from Volkswagen and Skoda.
These will be based on the cost-effective MQB AO-IN platform. This platform is essentially a localised version of the group’s MQB AO platform used globally. It looks increasingly likely that the Vento and the Rapid will be the first in line for a revamp.
Both Volkswagen and Skoda will use BS-VI compliant engines to cater to the current emission norms here. This would include sharing of powertrains in both Volkswagen and Skoda models. Recently, Volkswagen group announced their ambitions to garner a 5 percent market share in India by 2025.
This would need a lot of catching up to do and at the moment, the Volkswagen group seem ready for it. Both Volkswagen and Skoda are planning a mid-size SUV of their own for India. Other than that, an affordable hatchback from Skoda and a compact SUV from Volkswagen are also on the cards.
