The Mahindra TUV300 has just been launched in India. The highly-awaited compact SUV from Mahindra is priced at Rs. 6.9 lakh and ranging up to Rs. 9.12 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune).
The ‘T’ on the TUV moniker stands for Tough, this SUV is a true blue off-roader coming from the automaker taking inspiration from a battle tank in terms of design. It was under development for the past 4 years, and is a replacement dud-seller Quanto which did not find many takers. At first glimpse it looks like a cues borrowed from the Bolero and the design of the fascia is essentially a modernised version of the Bolero’s front.
This sub four-metre vehicle has a straight roofline in-line with the squarish shape of the vehicle that comes equipped with a boot-mounted spare wheel. The alloy wheels on the top-spec variant do look tiny compared to the overall proportions, we wish Mahindra had gone one size higher with the rims. The rear windshield is rather small and does look slightly out of place. And the overall design has no curves or bulges on this one.
On the inside, the interior gets a dual-tone theme with the neat black and beige combo, with silver accents that adds a premium touch. Like all the existing Mahindra, this too has a large glasshouse area allowing more light to enter the cabin for good ambience, also there is ample of headroom on offer. The TUV300 is a 7-seater (5 adults + 2 jump seats), the jump seats at rear are strictly for kids.
Other features on-board includes a 2-din touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and voice messaging system, Intellipark reverse parking sensors with camera, static bending lights, power windows, MID unit, electrically adjustable ORVMs, keyless entry, multi-function steering wheel with audio controls and Micro Hybrid (start stop system). The infotainment system also gets Bluetooth connectivity and AUX and USB ports and automatic climate control on top-of-the-line variants.
Under the hood, the TUV300 is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder mHawk80 diesel engine with a two-stage turbocharger generating 84 hp and 230 Nm of torque. The engine comes mated either to a 5-speed manual transmission or an autoSHIFT automated manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. The compact SUV delivers an ARAI certified mileage of 18.49 kmpl. An Eco mode along with Micro Hybrid technology (start-stop system) is on offer. Sadly, there is no petrol engine on offer.
As far as safety is concerned, the TUV300 comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist. ABS is standard on the T6, while the T8 also gets airbags in addition. However, ABS and airbags can be had as an option even on the base variants. It will be offered in 7 variants – T4, T4+, T6, T6+, T6+ AMT, T8+ and T8+ AMT. And a total of 7 colours on offer – Dynamo Red, Bold Black, Molten Orange, Majestic Silver, Verve Blue, Glacier White and made to order a special colour of Combat Green.
