Mercedes launched not one but two models from its international range in India. The sleek SL 350 sports car and the massive GL 500 SUV were launched by the German carmaker in New Delhi.

The SL 350 features a 3.5-litre V6 engine which belts out 315bhp of power and 360Nm of torque. The hard-top convertible can sprint from rest to 100kph in just 6.2 seconds and features a electrically retractable roof. The SL 350 is a CBU import and is priced at Rs. 98.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The GL 500 on the other hand is a huge SUV which can seat up to seven adults. It is powered by a 5.4-litre V8 petrol engine which produces 388bhp and is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The GL is a segment larger than the ML Class of SUV and has immense road presence owing to its bulk. The GL 500 is priced at Rs. 80.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

“The SL 350 and the GL 500 are two of the most popular offerings in our portfolio. I am confident that both the vehicles will woo auto enthusiasts, critics, customers and media alike,” Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director Peter Honegg told reporters here.

In another report Mercedes India MD and CEO Mr. Peter Honegg has been quoted as saying that the company would bring the GLC and GLK range of compact SUVs to India to compete with BMW’s X1 and X3 and Audi’s Q5 and upcoming Q3. This is however expected to happen only by 2013.
