We had reported earlier this year that, the next-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will have 5-seater as well as 7-seater variants and will offer a petrol as well as a diesel engine, and also that this new Wagon R would be launched by 2017. Well, there are a few new developments that might excite those who were actually waiting for the launch of this car.
Zauba.com, a website and organization which monitors Import and Export data, has revealed that Maruti Suzuki has Imported two units of the 7-seater Wagon R MPV. The vehicle, codenamed Maruti YJC has been imported into India by Maruti Suzuki from its Parent company, Suzuki’s plant in Japan.
What interests us even more is that, the description reveals one of the prototype being powered by a 1,197cc petrol engine, which is the K-series engine currently being used in the petrol variants of the Swift, Dzire, Ritz and Ertiga and the other prototype being powered by a 1,248cc diesel engine, which is the MultiJet DDiS turbo-diesel engine powering the diesel variants of the Swift, Dzire, Ritz, Ertiga, Ciaz and even the S-cross.
These prototypes then, seem perfectly made just for the Indian market and we expect to see them on the roads soon, testing in a camouflaged state. The Wagon R MPV which was earlier scheduled to go into production sometime in 2017, is now expected to be production ready by the second half of 2016.
The Wagon R MPV will be positioned above the Eeco, but below the Ertiga, in Maruti Suzuki’s product portfolio, and just like the other two MPV’s in their product portfolio, the Wagon R MPV will be made available to the Taxi/Fleet market too, apart from the passenger car market.
When launched, the Wagon R MPV will directly compete with the Datsun GO+.
