Hyundai to introduce an MPV for India, launch set for 2021

Reports have emerged that Hyundai will be looking to introduce an MPV for the Indian market. It is expected to be here sometime in 2021. Hyundai did reveal an MPV concept not long ago, during the 2012 Auto Expo, to be precise.

Christened the Hexaspace (HND-7), it was showcased just a couple of months before the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was launched in early-2012. Fast forward today, the Ertiga enjoys a monopoly in the affordable MPV segment, while only a few automakers have tried their hand in entering into it including Mahindra with Marazzo. Hyundai will likely be the next, and will hope to do well in the segment.

For that, Hyundai will look on placing their upcoming MPV at the same price point as the Ertiga. The Hexaspace will be marketed as an affordable MPV, having a decent amount of equipment to go with it. Hyundai will slot the Hexaspace in between the Venue compact SUV and the Creta mid-size SUV.

As per recent reports, Hyundai feel that they have completed half the project. This could mean that the Hexaspace will be seen soon undergoing testing on our roads, probably next year. The Hexaspace will likely be pinned by the same platform seen on the Grand i10 Nios here.

We can say that the Hexaspace will be undergoing a heavy amount of localisation to keep costs in check. When Hyundai does eventually launch the MPV here, it will rival the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the XL6, along with the Mahindra Marazzo and the Renault Lodgy. It remains to be seen whether there will be another winner from Hyundai’s stable in the Hexaspace.
