While the compact SUV segment is touted to be the fastest growing automobile segment in India right now, there is no hiding from the fact that the MUV/MPV segment too is a fast growing one. The MPV/MUV segment was once pioneered by vehicles like the Toyota Qualis and now has many more modern vehicles to choose from in the segment.
The MUV/MPV segment has for a long time now, been ruled by the Toyota Innova, but now there are other worthy competitors which are giving the pricey Toyota Innova a run for its money. Maruti Suzuki has the Ertiga, Honda has the Mobilio, Chevrolet has the Enjoy and Renault recently launched the Lodgy, and there is yet another MUV/MPV on its way to the Indian market.
According to Overdrive paper magazine, the IP MPVs production is expected to commence in India by early to mid 2016, and has now stated that the design has been finalized for the MPV. Y J Ahn, chief coordinator of sales & marketing, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. told the Times of India in a recent interview that the design and “other aspects” of the brand’s MPV has been “finalized”.
The MPV, codenamed ‘IP’ will not only cater to private customers, but will also be targeted at Fleet and Taxi operators and customers will be able to choose between petrol and diesel engine options, though we think that the diesel will outsell the petrol by a huge margin in this segment.
The ‘IP’ will be based on a modified Creta platform, which in turn is a modified version of the Elantra’s platform. Mr. YJ Ahn was also quoted as saying that the MPV will be launched in the next year, though we do not know exactly when.
When it does get launched, we are sure that it will be a huge success, as Hyundai always has managed to get it right with its customers.
