This is the upcoming Hyundai MPV internally codenamed ‘IP’, which made its first appearance at the 2012 Auto Expo, known as the Hexa Space Concept.
At the Creta’s launch, Hyundai India confirmed the development of the MPV that will directly compete with the likes of Maruti Ertiga and Honda Mobilio. Furthermore, this upcoming MPV will share a lot of components with the Creta SUV, when launched in 2016. Like the Creta, the new MPV is likely to come packed with segment leading features and a proven powertain lineup that is derived from Verna sedan.
This test mule is early prototype with mismatched parts and a lot of camouflage to ensure its identity is hidden. At first glimpse it resembles a bit of the ix20 hatchback in terms of styling, and a design characteristic from Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language is evident. At the rear, the high roofline hints a decent space and head-room for the third-row passengers.
The reports state that initially, the MPV will get the 1.4-litre petrol and diesel engines from the Verna, which make 105bhp and 89bhp respectively, but the 126bhp 1.6-litre diesel and 121bhp 1.6-litre petrol could be introduced at a later stage. Further, the report says that Hyundai wants to offer an automatic transmission early on to get a head start over the competition.
