Hyundai India is known to be working on a new compact SUV to compete against the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Terrano and the Renault Duster. However, rumors have been bouncing back and forth as to what Hyundai will call the new compact SUV, which continues the brand’s onslaught of introducing new models in the Indian market.
The new model was codenamed Hyundai GS, today the company has officially announced that its upcoming compact SUV will be called ‘Creta’. Hyundai claims that this name is easy to remember and is similar to the word ‘creative’. The vehicle will be known as the Creta all over the world. The global launch of the Creta will take place in India in the second half of 2015 (probably in August) and then will be sold in worldwide markets, including Korea.
The Creta is based on the ix25 compact SUV that was unveiled in China last-year. It will measure 4.27 metres in length and will accommodate 5 passengers. The Creta has borrowed design cues from its big brother, the Santa Fe, but mechanically, it might be powered by the same engines found on the Verna – 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines mated to 5- and 6-speed manual gearbox respectively. An 1.4-litre diesel engine on base model too is expected.
The Creta is expected to be priced between Rs 8 lakh to 12 lakh, when launched in India.
