Great Wall Motors Indian debut at 2020 Auto Expo shows a positive sign

China’s largest SUV manufacturer, Great Wall Motors made its first public debut in India at the 2020 Indian Auto Expo, since setting-up an research facility in 2016 at Bengaluru. At the event, 50+ local distributors across India showed great interests in the products of HAVAL brand and Great Wall EV brand, which is a positive sign for the newcomer.

The company had rented an independent booth at the biennial event, displaying cars from 2 of its sub-brands – Haval and Ora. Haval presented the range of SUVs like F5, F7, F7X, Vision 2025 Concept, Concept H, as well as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour rivalling H9 full-size SUV, while Ora showcased the R1 and iQ electric cars.

At the GWM pavilion on display was a functional area that had a showcase of Lithium-Ion Battery, Haval Intelligent Home, Haval Intelligent Safety Display and Great Wall Autonomous EV. Also displayed the Intelligent home concept where one controls home appliances connected with the Intelligent Connected vehicles, Intelligent Safety of HAVAL SUVs, New Energy Products and many more interactive activities.

At the moment, the company is seriously looking to make a mark in India and have taken some crucial steps for that. One such step is the acquisition of General Motors’ Talegaon manufacturing plant, the deal is expected to be completed by the second half of 2020.

Although the immediate focus is on the Indian market, but its expected that Great Wall Motors may be using the facility here as a base to export. It plans to heavily localise in India, right from engine and gearboxes to electronic components and battery for electric vehicles.

Other than that, the automaker is willing to spend a large amount on developing new facilities for design and development of vehicles. As per trusted sources, Great Wall Motors plans to start selling H9 full-size SUV in India by the first quarter of 2021 which would be followed by an electric vehicle and mid-size SUVs by 2022-2023.
