In July-2013 Nissan re-launched its low-cost car brand Datsun, after 32 long years. The first car showcased was a sub-Rs 4 lakh hatchback christened ‘Datsun Go’, that is speculated to hit our roads sometime next-year. Yesterday, Datsun has now unveiled the brand’s second model, the Go+ MPV in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Go+ is a low cost MPV (or more like a station wagon), low-cost MPV with three row seating based on the Go platform which will be priced at under 100 million Indonesian rupiah (roughly equates to 5.52 lakh rupees) in Indonesia. The Go+ MPV will become the second product in the brand’s Indonesian range from 2014.

How does the Go+ MPV become a 7-seater? The Go+ MPV as its length increased to 3,995 mm, making it a good 210 mm longer than the Go hatchback. The Go+ is a 5+2 MPV developed to accommodate all family members in one car for the journey, as seen in the Mercedes R-Class. The last row of seats can be folded to boost boot space.

The Go+ will be offered with Datsun Mobile Docking Station – the practical solution of smart-phones integration into the car. Built on the Go’s platform (which is in turn based on the Nissan Micra), the GO+ MPV looks quite ugly and the proportions are very awkward, unlike Go hatchback. The buyers will ignore styling of the MPV if the pricing is done aggressively in the Indian market.

The Datsun GO+ is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is the same unit that does duty on the Micra and GO hatchback. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and offers decent performance for city driving. The other car specifications are yet to be unveiled. Safely expect the car to get the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine when it is launched in India.

Mr. Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO, said at the unveiling –

“With the return of the Datsun brand, we are changing mobility. And we’re ensuring greater access to the pride, independence and opportunities that car ownership provides. It’s exciting to know that, for many Indonesians, the first new car they buy will be a Datsun”
