It has been reported that Bajaj Auto has been working on a sub-brand which will spawn electric two wheelers. The brand has been codenamed ‘URBANITE’ and is expected to arrive by 2020. This comes sometime after Bajaj formed a partnership with Triumph to jointly develop bikes, which will also be launched around the same time.

The company launching the URBANITE brand would mean the arrival of scooters into Bajaj’s lineup, albeit Electric ones. The URBANITE ones will use electric power trains, which will compete with other two wheelers in our markets. Expect a high-end electric two-wheeler with great design and features.
It also looks likely that the price of the electric two wheelers may be on the affordable size. This is given Bajaj’s low-cost techniques and localization of parts. Bajaj Auto’s managing director Rajiv Bajaj has stated that this technology is not restricted to two-wheelers, which means it may also spawn 3-wheelers.
India is fast giving importance to electric two-wheelers, given that Tork is all set to launch the T4x in its real form soon and we also have an electric scooter in the Okinawa Ridge. Bajaj’s arch rival Hero MotoCorp has also entered the electric two-wheeler segment some time ago and will showcase more models in the future. Bajaj are set to make their EV’s more dapper in order to keep a foothold in the electric two-wheeler segment.
