Bajaj Auto which is one of the best 2-wheeler and 3-wheeler selling company in India has officially announced that it will start the production of the the much anticipated RE60 in 2013. After the launch of the RE60, the Tata Nano which is titled as the world cheapest car currently will be brought down from this title. The RE60 would be the first four wheeled car built by Bajaj and it was first showcased at 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi, keeping in view the urban transportation.
The RE60 is powered with 20 horsepower 200cc single cylinder engine which uses two spark plugs along with 4-valve water cooled DTS-i engine with a closed loop fuel injection and is expected to give a mileage of 35+ kmpl. RE60 is 108 inches long, 64 inches high and 51 inches wide and just about 450 kg in kerb weight. Though the pricing is yet to be announced, the RE60 will compete with the Tata Magic Iris and the Mahindra Gio Compact Cab.
Coming to the other specifications, RE60 will have 1+3 seating option and to ensure safety it has also been provide with seat belts. The windows cannot be rolled down but instead they would be flipped to be opened and RE60 would continue to have the rearseats which are already present in most of Bajaj 3-wheelers. Price has not been announced yet but its expected to be lesser than the Tata Nano and the company has also stated that prices will be disclosed only once regulations are approved.
The company has received various government approvals, which in-principle is enough to start the full-fledged commercial production of RE60. But, they are awaiting approval from government appointed committee which is yet to decide on which category this vehicle will fall into once launched in the Indian auto industry.
No time frame for receipt of these sanctions were revealed, but the company is all-set to commence production immediately on approval and are hoping that these come within this financial year. Bajaj Auto has also revealed that they will produce 5,000 units of RE60 every month.
