Maruti Suzuki are desperate to upgrade their popular hatchback, the Wagon-R in India as well as globally. The next-gen Wagon-R is scheduled to launch here on January 23, 2019. There will be an addition of more premium features and the vehicle will retain its tallboy design.
The next-gen Wagon-R has started arriving at dealerships and recently, details regarding the vehicle have been leaked. These say that the Wagon-R will be available in two petrol engine options. They include a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder motor along with a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder one.
Maruti Suzuki will offer three variants, namely LXI, VXI and ZXI. The ZXI will be the only one of them which will get the 1.2-litre engine. Maruti Suzuki are likely to discontinue the VXI+ variant, seen on the older model. A total of 6 colours will be on offer – White, Silver, Grey, Orange, Brown and Blue.
Both these engines will be available in manual and automatic form. The next-gen Wagon-R will be based on Maruti Suzuki’s Heartect platform, seen on models like the Swift and Dzire. At 845 kg, it will be 45 kg lighter than the previous model.
The next-generation Wagon-R will be longer, taller and wider, and will carry a good increase in wheelbase. Prices are to begin from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). When launched, the new Wagon-R will rival the Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago, Datsun Go and the Renault Kwid.
