Japanese major Yamaha today (14/09/2012) launched its first scooter Ray in India and the launch event was held at Novotel hotel in Hyderabad. As Yamaha got ready to launch Ray, its first model to foray into India’s scooter market, they aggressively marketed the scooter as a woman’s ride with their obvious women-oriented marketing campaign. The company has gone all the way with the idea putting together not just that but a rider training program for women as well as an assembly line which is operated entirely by women for the Ray.
The Yamaha Ray scooter comes with a price tag of Rs. 46,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the bookings for the same has been already started & so far they have received 6900 advance bookings. The Ray was first shown at the 2012 Auto Expo and more recently when Yamaha announced that actor Deepika Padukone was to be the brand ambassador for the product. Besides these, Yamaha has also devised and launched multiple promotional activities to create excitement and interest for the new scooter.
Under the skin, it is powered by an 113cc 4-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine mated to an automatic CVT transmission. Furthermore, it can deliver a peak power of 7bhp at 7,500rpm and a maximum torque of 8.1 Nm at 5,000rpm. The company claims a 0-60kmph time of 12 seconds and a fuel efficiency of 62.1kmpl. The engine seems to be clearly tuned for mileage and has both electric and kick start options. It comes fitted with a 5-litre tank.
