KTM Duke 200 has been officially unveiled in Malaysia by Mr Najib Run Razak (Prime Minister of Malaysia). At an event held in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, Austrian motorcycle manufacturer, KTM launched their Duke 125 and Duke 200 variant. These variants are specially manufactured for the Asian market, including India.
The Duke 200 is being assembled at KTM’s Malaysian assembly plant through CKD kits. These kits are exported by Bajaj Auto from their Chakan plant to KTM Malaysia. Production will commence by the end of the year and deliveries will start early next year. Only three Duke 200 bikes have been assembled by KTM Malaysia, which have been used for display and promotional purposes. There is no difference between the Duke 125 and Duke 200 with the only difference being the engine. KTM Duke 200 is scheduled to go on sale in 2012 with a price tag of approximately Rs 1.1 – 1.35 lakhs.
We have no official information on when it shall be officially launched in India, but we expect it to be launch by end or 2011 or early 2012. The Yamaha R15 is soon to be uncovered on 6th September, so lets see how the pricing and placement of these bikes affect the future preferences of the performance bike buyer in India.
KTM will enter Indian bike industry in collaboration with Bajaj Auto. Once again Bajaj plans to start a price war as compared to competitors, KTM Duke 200 will be priced very low. In fact the Hero Honda Karizma will also fall close in terms of the price band, so it maybe a game changer when it arrives here in India.
Refesher – The 200 cc, KTM motor is a 4-stroke, liquid cooled, 4-valve, DOHC, fuel injected unit which is expected to produce around 22 BHP of power. The torque of the Duke will be the really good with the bike weighing in just under 140 kgs.
