Toyota Innova Crysta CNG variant on card, launch by end-2020

Toyota are working on introducing a CNG variant of their popular MPV, the Innova Crysta for the market. As per reports, the CNG variant of the vehicle is set to be launched by the end of this year. There was an instance of a test mule spotted on Indian roads not long ago.

The Innova Crysta is very popular with private buyers as well as fleet operators.

It is said that the Innova Crysta CNG is likely to be offered for the fleet and taxi market. But, we can expect a handful of owners to buy the MPV for their individual use. The Innova Crysta CNG will carry forward the same design as the current one.

Toyota may reduce the number of features on the vehicle given its use. As far as its engine is concerned, there will be a 2.7 litre petrol motor under the hood of the vehicle. This engine produces 164 BHP of power along with 245 Nm of torque.

The CNG version could be offered in lower trims only.

It comes mated with options of either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, we can expect Toyota to ditch the automatic one on the CNG variant and make it available only with a manual transmission. The addition of a factory fitted CNG kit will also reduce the power output of the vehicle, hence we can expect a drop in its specifications.

At present, there are no MPV’s in India which are offered with a CNG variant. Thus, Toyota will be given a good chance to try the Innova Crysta CNG here. This is with the hope that it will perform well here and also tempt other manufacturers to bring CNG variants of their own.
