Tata Motors showcased a range of new concepts of defence vehicles including, the new Tata Safari Storme GS (General Service) 800 and the Tata Safari Storme Armoured at the 2012 India Defence Expo at New Delhi. The SUV which is expected to be launched in the market soon has been designed to travel through every rough India terrain carrying officials during war and peacetime.
The Tata Safari Storme GS 800 4WD in its olive green cladding is being seen as a high mobility platform that will be used for transporting officers during peacetime, as well as during conflicts, across locations in India. The GS 800 was designed and developed by the Indian automaker in-house and in-line with the requirement of the Defence forces.
The Tata Safari Storme Armoured, on the other hand is being seen as a very safe vehicle that is equipped with the state-of-art-technology for catering to the VVIP movement in the forces. The Storme Armoured dons a strengthened chassis and suspension system and enhanced braking to tackle the additional armored weight.
The new Safari Storme which was unveiled at the Delhi Moto Expo 2012 earlier this year comes much upgraded from the old Safari. The Safari Storme will be powered by a 2.2L 16-valve common rail (DiCOR) engine (140 PS power; 320 Nm torque) with a variable geometry turbo, mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.
No announcements on the prices of the military-spec Storme Armoured SUV have been made yet. Tata Motors will not only supply the Storme Armoured SUV to the Indian Armed Forces, but will also supply the new SUV to the heads of state and top level VIPs as pilot vehicles. Besides the Storme, Tata Motors also displayed a row of defence vehicles at the Expo.
