Here’s an early look at the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, ahead of its public launch at 2014 Auto Expo next-week. The Ciaz (codenamed YL1) is an SX4 replacement, but will be based on an all-new platform and will be available in both petrol & diesel engine option. The world got a first preview of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as Suzuki Authentics Concept at 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. The production-spec Authentics Concept aka Ciaz had been spotted without any camouflage at one of Maruti’s facilities in August-2013.

As expected, the Ciaz takes heavy cues from both the smaller, more fashionable Celerio and the flagship, statesmen-like Kizashi. The front lights are narrower than those on the Kizashi and swept back further like the Celerio’s, also note the addition of projector headlamps. On the inside too, the Ciaz sedan will borrow the design theme from Swift, Ertiga and Kizashi with dual-tone upholstery in the usual beige and grey combination. Apart from this, the interiors have been garnished with faux wooden finish and chrome accents.

Under the hood, the Ciaz mid-sized sedan will be launched in both petrol and diesel engine variants. While the petrol engine would be carried over from the Ertiga MUV with the four-cylinder 1.4-litre K-Series petrol engine which produces 94 bhp with 130 Nm, the diesel engine, the 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel motor is likely to carry from the Fiat. Later will be powered by one of Suzuki’s own diesel engines that are currently under development. The gearboxes are expected to be a 5-speed manual and most probably the AMT from the Celerio hatchback.

The new Ciaz is a C-segment sedan and it will be a world car, replacing the current SX4 sedan. Apart from India, the Ciaz would be sold in other markets such as China, West Asia and Africa. Interestingly, Maruti will be responsible for exporting the Ciaz (by means of CKD/SKD kits) to the above mentioned locations. Maruti Suzuki is considering to launch the Ciaz later this-year, during the festive season. Currently, the company is struggling to sell the SX4 and if they showcased the Ciaz mid-sized sedan at Auto Expo next-week, the remaining units of the SX4 will be very difficult to sell.
