Suzuki brings out hot-hatch Swift RS in Malaysia – Will it come to India?

Maruti Suzuki being the No.1 manufacturer of passenger cars in the Indian market had made the debut of Swift hatchback in 2005 which is currently India’s best selling B+ segment hatchback. With the spy shots of the upcoming Swift available all over the web, Suzuki Malaysia has launched a new sportier edition of their hot-hatch, Swift RS, in an ever-red shade.

The RS don’t stand for Racing Sport or Rallye Sport but rather ‘Reinvent Style’, so don’t jump into any conclusions about finding a more powerful engine / tune in the Swift RS. Unlike the Maruti Swift RS Special Edition that was launched in India with just body decals and painted hub caps, the Malaysian version packs in additional features. Globally, the 136 PS Swift Sport is the most potent of its kind, and from what we can see, this ‘Swift RS’ isn’t based on the SSS (Suzuki Swift Sport), as it doesn’t have the former’s twin pipes and diffuser.

Based on the top-end GLX variant, the Swift RS is available only in Superior White exterior color shade with crimson red and black touch ups. There’s also a full body kit made up of front and rear diffusers, side skirts and a spoiler, and there’s also what is called a ‘gradient roof-top’, which is a black-into-red roof decal. Side decals complete the exterior rework, and give a speedy appeal.

On the inside, the Swift RS features ‘rally-inspired’ sporty leather seat covers and door trim, dressed in black with red accents and with the ‘Swift’ name stitched on the front seat. t comes equipped with 2-DIN Kenwood multimedia infotainment system with Bluetooth, GPS Navigation and reverse camera. The standard equipment of the GLX variant include dual airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, automatic climate control, tilt/telescopic leather wrapped steering wheel, rear disc brakes and push-button start.

No mechanical changes means the same K14B, 1.4-litre petrol engine does duty on new Swift RS, producing 95 PS max. power at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm peak torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is transferred via a 4-speed automatic transmission. Like the regular Swift in Malaysia, the Swift RS too gets a three-year or 100,000 km warranty, but the RS roof decal only gets a two-year warranty.

The RS package commands a price of RM79,388 (INR 14,92,775), on-the-road without insurance, which is a RM5,600 (INR 1,05,300) premium over the next model in line, the RM73,788 (INR 13,87,475) Swift GLX, though it’s still a distance away price-wise from the Swift Sport, which goes for RM97,888 (INR 18,40,641) in its manual guise and RM102,888 (INR 19,34,658) in CVT form.
