When we hear the brand name Strom Motors for the first time, it immediately strikes us of the San Storm a two-seater Roadster from San Motors that was introduced in 1998. However, let me clear for you before we introduced the Strom R3 that there is no connection or link between these two companies.
Mumbai-based startup Strom Motors was founded in 2016 by an electric automobile enthusiast, Pratik Gupta with co-founder Jean-Luc Abaziou, ex-CEO of Alcatel, and his colleague working in a Washington DC based R&D company delivering innovative solutions for NASA, US Army and Homeland Security. In April-2018, the Strom R3 made its first public debut at Infiniti Mall, Mumbai.
Strom R3 three-wheeled electric car was supposed to be launched in March-2020, but the launch had now been postponed. Bookings are likely to commence online from their website soon for the top-end variant only with a total of four 3-tone metallic colour options – Blue, Grey, Red and White. It is likely to be priced at around Rs. 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
This 2-seater, electric reverse trike measures 2907mm in length, 1450mm in width, 1572mm in height, with a 2012mm wheelbase & ground clearance of 185mm and a kerb weight of 550 kgs. The R3 comes with a large Sun-Roof and Rear Roofline Spoiler. The vehicle rides on a 13-inch alloys shod with 155/80 rubber. It gets front alloy wheels and a stamped steel wheel at the rear.
On the inside, the Strom R3 comes equipped with a dual-tone dashboard, a 3-spoke steering wheel, a 4.3-inch touchscreen digital instrument cluster, a 12-way adjustable driver’s seat and a 7.0-inch vertically aligned touchscreen head unit with an IOT-enabled Continuous Monitoring System and has 4G connectivity, voice control, gesture control, 20 GB of onboard music storage, smart music playlist, and mobile connectivity.
Furthermore, the Strom R3 electric car will come with an auxiliary 2.4-inch touchscreen for air-con climate control functionality, customisable user interface, and voice controls UI, among others. It is fitted with power windows, air conditioning, remote keyless entry and 3-point seatbelts. However, the absence of airbags and meeting the new safety standards still remains a big question mark?
Coming to the important aspect on electric drivetrain, the Strom R3 is powered by a lithium-ion battery and electric motor that develops max power of 20 hp and 90 Nm torque, attaining a top-speed of 80 kmph on a single charge. It takes 3 hours to get fully-charged and delivers a range of 200 kms. It comes with three driving modes (Eco, Normal and Sports) and regenerative braking.
The Strom R3 is based on a space frame made of high-strength steel and has two front hydraulic disk brakes and one rear drum brake. This cute little 2-door 2-seater battery-operated car with 3 wheels comes with a warranty of 1 year or 15,000 kms whichever is earlier. When launched in India, it might compete with the upcoming Mahindra Atom EV.
