SPIED: Tata Altroz turbo petrol, ahead of festive season launch

Earlier this year, Tata Motors introduced the Altroz premium hatchback in the Indian market. The Tata Altroz was the first model based on the automakers ALFA architecture platform and it turned out to be one of the most important product launches in recent years by the automaker. However, while the Altroz received good reviews from journalists and automotive enthusiasts, sales never quite justified that.

Tata Altroz turbo petrol variant is likely to be offered in higher-spec trims only and could be priced around Rs. 8 to 9 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

One such reason for that is the less powerful petrol engine on the car, which received a lot of flak. Tata Motors is now on a mission to correct that and will introduce the Altroz with a new turbocharged petrol motor. The Altroz Turbo was recently spied undergoing testing just a couple of months before its official launch.

From the snapshot, we can notice the rear of the Altroz sporting a turbo badge. Other than that, the Altroz can be seen in a new shade of blue, which looks similar to the one on the Nexon. It looks like Tata Motors will be introducing it on the car once its turbo variant eventually arrives.

The main highlight of it will be the 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine borrowed from the Nexon as well. This engine produces 118 BHP of power and 170 Nm of torque. Unless Tata Motors decides to tune the engine, the Altroz turbo will remain the most powerful car in its class.

There is no official word yet regarding the Tata Altroz turbo petrol launch date.

This will eclipse the Volkswagen Polo, whose 1.0 litre petrol motor makes 110 BHP of power. The Nexon turbo is offered with options of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT transmission. However, Tata Motors may reportedly give the Altroz Turbo a DCT unit instead of an AMT one alongside the manual.

The Altroz Turbo is expected to carry a price tag of Rs.8-9 lakh when it eventually gets launched here. It will rival the Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and the Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback space. Tata Motors will now hope that the turbocharged petrol motor on the Altroz will finally gather some interest among the public regarding the car.
