Chevrolet India is trying its best to make a stronger foot hold in India. The company plans to launch more than 5 new products by end-2012, this may include the facelifted Spark. Because recently, a Team-Bhp forum member named Adi_k has spotted the Chevrolet Spark hatchback with a new look and slight camouflage doing the testing rounds in Pune.
This test mule spotted is giving rise to various possibilities. One such possibility is the car getting a smaller, 3-cylinder, 800cc petrol engine under the hood, though not confirmed officially from General Motors. This new 800cc engine would help the company reduce prices of the car 20-30,000 Rupees. With this, the Spark may catch up the sale and enter a segment dominated by Hyundai Eon and Maruti Alto. The LPG variant is also expected to be carried on to the 800cc model.
Another possibility, albeit with a higher probability, is a mild facelift for the Spark. As the Daewoo Matiz, it was an 800cc hatchback. Since it turned into the Chevrolet Spark, the looks of the car have remained pretty much the same for quite a while now and mid career facelift is very much due for this small car given that it has been almost 5 years since the Spark was first launched in India.
While there are no plans for the 1-litre multijet diesel mill going on duty under the refreshed Spark’s hood, as we told earlier this is what sources have been telling us. Currently, the Spark is the 995cc petrol engine entry level car by Chevrolet. But with the launch of Hyundai Eon recently, the car was facing much downslide in sales.
Now it seemed to be the right time for Chevrolet to give its entry level small car a facelift with downside engine. If the car maker is able to slash some thousands from the car price, expect some good numbers on the sales chart. Meanwhile, with the new 800cc engine the Spark will also be equipping itself to steal the show before the new Maruti 800cc replacement arrives in.
