Spied – Chevrolet Sail saloon in India

Chevrolet-Sail-India

These are the first ever images of Chevrolet Sail spotted at a parking lot in unknown Indian location, thanks to our friends at IndianAutosBlog. The all-new Chevrolet Sail is just one in a slew of new models coming from China, this saloon is the first passenger car developed in China by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Centre (PANTAC).

A little-known fact is that the Sail’s platform has its roots in the same Opel Corsa that was on sale in India until 2006. Of course, the platform has been beefed up and updated but to use a completely depreciated platform as a starting point has saved massive costs.

When launched in India, GM will use its version of the Fiat Multi-jet diesel engine. The SMARTECH technology combined to the 1.2-liter and 1.4-liter S-TEC petrol engines could make up the remaining line-up although the former might be reserved for the hatchback.

The Sail may not give GM India huge volumes but it could be a significant player in the crucial lower mid-sizer segment. Bigger numbers can be expected from the hatchback version of the Sail, which will target the Swift. What remains to be seen is how well these products perform on Indian roads but what’s for sure is that this credible and well engineered car that could change the perception of Chinese products. The competition had better be worried.
