Czech automaker Skoda is readying a premium hatchback for India. The car will be based on Skoda’s low cost MQB AO platform. We can expect its launch to take place in end-2019.
This car will flag off Skoda’s strategy of introducing low-cost cars in between 2018 and 2020. Other low cost models will include a compact SUV, a Maruti Suzuki Baleno rival, a Sedan which will replace the Rapid and the Karoq mid-size SUV. The hatchback has not been confirmed for India yet, but given the popularity of other hatchbacks like the Swift and Grand i10 here, expect Skoda to give it the nod.
This decision will take place in the middle of the year. As for now Skoda will facelift its outgoing Rapid as well as other models from its line-up to keep it fresh. It’s sister brand, Volkswagen will update the Polo and Vento, which are also expected to be replaced by newer models.
All we can expect is a good car with some handy equipment from Skoda. This hatchback will come at a starting price of around Rs. 5-6 lakhs and go all the way till Rs.10 lakh for the top model. It will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Mahindra KUV100.
