The Renault’s little engined micro SUV has been spotted in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu by our good friends at MotorBeam. A pair of test mules snapped looked production-ready and wearing no camouflage. While the folks at evoIndia have snapped Kwid’s 800 cc petrol engine, and confirmed the launch of AMT variant.
As announced at the unveiling that Kwid is slated for launch in the festive season this-year, pre-launch marketing activities will kick start shortly and reports suggest that Ranbir Kapoor has been roped in as its brand ambassador. At 98% localisation, the baby Duster is the most localized car in India, thus, the company might be able to price the KWID in the Rs 3-4 lakh segment.
Despite being so cheap, the Kwid has SUV-inspired styling that distinguishes itself from other cars in the A-segment market, however, the slim tyres which are used in the interest of fuel economy appear out of place. Other notable features those aren’t even available on most cars two to three sizes up, such as a 7” inch touchscreen with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.
Under the bonnet sits a new 800cc, twin cam, three-cylinder petrol engine which is reported to produce 57 bhp, making it the most powerful in its segment. In comparison, Maruti Alto 800 produces 47.3 bhp and Hyundai Eon 800 is good for 55.2 bhp. A 5-speed manual gearbox will drive the front wheels and there would also be an AMT at a later stage, as confirmed.
The Renault Kwid will share its engine with the upcoming Datsun redi-Go, given that the two cars are now built on common platforms (Renault-Nissan’s CMF-A).
