Nissan is aiming to boost its stagnant sales numbers in India by launching new products. The company has quite a few offerings lined up for the next couple of years here. The first of them will be the Kicks mid-size SUV, slated for launch in early 2019 with bookings likely to commence by the end of 2018.
Recently, the Kicks was spotted wrapped in camouflage undergoing testing in Chennai ahead of its official unveiling on 18 October. The company has also released the teaser sketches of its new Hyundai Creta rival. On the front will be an attractive grille which gets chrome accents, swept-back headlamps with LED’s placed above a bold bumper design. We can see the car having a floating roof-line, with distinctively shaped tail-lamps at the rear.
Sold in various markets across the world, the Kicks is based on the V platform seen on the new Micra. However in India, Nissan will instead use an updated version of the Terrano’s low-cost B0/Logan platform, which will underpin future models from the company and also Renault. Features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, flat bottom leathered steering, alloy wheels, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and so on.
Engine-wise, the Kicks will be on-sale in both petrol and diesel options. The petrol engine will be a 1.5-litre motor giving 106 BHP of power and 142 Nm of torque. On the other hand, there will be a 1.5-litre diesel engine which produces 110 BHP of power and 245 Nm of torque.
The petrol engine will come mated to a 5-speed manual or CVT, while the diesel engine will have a 6-speed manual with the option of an AMT. With the prices likely to start around Rs. 9.5 lakhs (ex-showroom), it will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and the upcoming Tata Harrier, Suzuki Vitara, Kia Trazor and the MG Motor ZS. When launched, the Kicks will be Nissan’s first new model launched here since the Terrano in 2013.
