The South Korean car manufacturer, Ssangyong which is owned by Mahindra has recently unveiled an updated version of the Rexton SUV at the 2012 Busan Motor Show, dubbed as the Rexton W. The new W SUV got a major facelift on the outside along with the engine that has been tweaked a bit to deliver high fuel efficiency.
On the outside, Rexton W gets new bumper, restyled headlamps, refreshed grille and day time running lamps. The redesigned chrome-lined grille is now wider and looks much smarter than before, and houses a large SsangYong logo in the centre. On the other hand, the rear profile of the car has also been refurbished completely. It also gets integrated LED turn-indicators on the wing-mirrors.
On the inside, Rexton W has faced a lot of changes like the dashboard with a dash of chrome which gives the car a more premium look and now it’s much comfy and better than previous model, while the safety of the passengers has also been amplified substantially. The SUV will come with Active Roll over Protection, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, smart key system, ESP, Ultrasonic Warning System, rain sensing wipers and Eco cruise control.
Under the hood, Rexton W is powered by a new and efficient turbo diesel, called the e-XDi200 active. Mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, this new 154bhp 1,998cc in-line four cylinder diesel motor replaces the current 2.7-litre engine sourced from Mercedes. A new 2.2 litre twin turbocharged diesel motor, developing a whooping 221bhp, is also in the pipeline. However, it isn’t clear what engine option will be offered when the Rexton is launched in India.
Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to launch the Rexton in India soon, but it remains to be seen which model will make its way here. Meanwhile, the new Rexton W will hit the Korean showrooms by June/July 2012.
