At a private event in Goa, BMW India previewed what could be a model it plans to launch next – the new 2016 BMW 7-series. Nothing much is known about the event, but it was the first Indian public appearance, and only selected guests had the chance to see in metal the latest creation of Munich’s new luxo-barge.
In India, the sixth-gen 7-series is expected to launch at the 2016 Auto Expo, according to a BMW spokesperson. It will be solely available in LWB (Long Wheel-Base) specification with only diesel option for the Indian market in the BMW 730Ld trim. The new 7-series made its first global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September-2015.
The 2016 7-Series exterior design draws inspiration from the BMW Gran Lusso Concept, and the design gives us a preview of what we can expect from the next-generation model range from BMW. The redesigned LED headlights are slimmer and more attractive than on the out-going, and following the recent BMW design language, they now flow seamlessly into the kidneys. The sculpted front hood is also lower and leaner, a design approach to emphasize sportiness and dynamics.
As said above, the Indian market will only get the BMW 730Ld. It will come powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine developing 265 PS (7 PS more than the outgoing model), and 620 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Power goes to all-four-wheels instead of just to the rear wheels thanks to the xDrive system, while fuel efficiency is rated at 22.2 kmpl (EU cycle).
The 730Ld is capable of nailing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.8 seconds. If equipped with xDrive system (it’s yet unclear if the local car previewed has it), that time gets slashed to 6.1 seconds on non-xDrive models.
