The automotive industry is developing like never before, sales are higher than ever and manufacturers are launching more and more products and the credit for all of the above goes to ever improving technology. Today, technology has become the backbone for the operation of the automobile industry and no new vehicle would move without it, and we can begin to imagine what technology would do to driving and to vehicles 10 years into the future, but it seems as though Mercedes-Benz has beaten us to it.
This concept truck showcases what to expect from the near future of trucking, including autonomous driving technologies.Mercedes-Benz has already developed a concept of their vision for the trucking industry in the future. Mercedes-Benz has developed the Future truck 2025, and has displayed it at the International Commercial Vehicle Show, 2014 held at Hannover, in Germany. This is what the boffins at Mercedes-Benz feel, the future of trucking will be like.
One word to describe the looks of the future truck would be: Futuristic. The truck looks like something one would find in a space age movie and on the exterior, it features flat surfaces everywhere. The front of the truck features LED lights around the ‘3-pointed star’ logo which change color according to the mode the truck is being driven in.
The main priority has been given to safety and there is a system which helps the truck drive itself at speeds of upto 80 KMPH on expressways. This system takes the help of a few radar sensors scattered at different positions on the truck which feeds information to the different systems in the truck which in turn controls it according to the given situation. The Truck also features a Blind Spot Assist system that warns the truck driver about other road users when turning as well as about imminent collisions with stationary obstacles.
The interior of the truck looks more like the modern workspace of a German architect than the cockpit of a work vehicle.The interior is squeaky clean and looks like a scene out of a five-star hotel, the truck features wooden flooring that continues to flow and form half the dashboard too, it also features a reclining captain’s seat for the driver and a first-class style seat for the passengers. The door mirrors are replaced by LED screens on the inside which are connected to camera’s on the outside and the driver has 4 of these screens to look at, in addition to these, the driver also gets a Samsung Tablet which can be used to browse the Internet while the truck is driving itself in autonomous mode and the same Tab turns into an Information display device when placed on the dashboard dock.
So far, we have no information regarding the engine to be used in the truck, but in all probability, it will be a hybrid drive-train, if not fully electric.
