Mercedes-Benz India has launched the most affordable car in its line-up, the B-Class Sports Tourer at a starting price of Rs 21.49 lakh for the B180 and Rs 24.87 lakh for the B180 Sport (ex-showroom, Mumbai). This is unbelievable but true and keeping the price so low means that Mercedes is desperate to put itself back to the number one position in the luxury car market.

Surprisingly, the company claims the 250 cars allocated for 2012 have been sold out to the customers. For those who have missed out an opportunity have to wait till January 2013, when the company would re-open the bookings of the car in the second round. The Mercedes officials claimed that by the end of October 2012, all the 250 units of the car, which were pre-booked today would be dispatched to the customers. The customers will have to wait to drive the car for atleast one month.

The B-Class is a compact MPV car, which can be categories as luxury compact sports tourer. Not only in India, but across the world, the car lovers have admired the B-Class with over 75,000 proud owners worldwide. Besides this, the B-class will be the first offering from Mercedes to sit on the new front-wheel-drive (MFA) platform. This platform is used in the new A-class, and will also do duty in the upcoming A-class-based saloon and in a compact SUV as well.

This model is available in three exciting colours, Jupiter Red, Circus White and Polar Silver Metallic. The standard features that are made available are seven-speed DCT auto ‘box, start-stop system, airbags, attention assist, hill-start- and brake-assist, and a panoramic sunroof. The B180 Sport comes with 17-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the Sport model gets twin chrome slats on the grille, twin-pipe exhausts, sporty pedals, a sporty leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and bi-Xenon lamps. The Base and Sport models feature identical suspension setups.

Under the hood lies a 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine which is capable of producing 122PS of power and 200Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission fitted with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. To aid fuel efficiency, Mercedes have kitted the B-Class with the stop-start system it returns an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 14.8kmpl. The top speed of the car is 190 kmph and it can sprint to a 100 kph mark in just 10.2 seconds. A 1.8-litre diesel motor will join the petrol unit later next year.
