Country’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki has many models lined up for launch in India. Among them is an all-new premium hatchback codenamed ‘YRA’ that will directly compete with the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20 and the upcoming Honda Jazz, alongside Tata Motors’ too is working on a closet rival!
The YRA was previewed in the concept version as Suzuki iK-2 Concept at the Geneva Motor Show 2015 this-year and was announced to launch in Europe in early-2016. In India, the YRA is set to debut in second half of this year may be sometime during the festive season and is likely to be sold at Maruti’s premium range of dealerships, Nixa.
Previously the YRA was spied inside company plant, this is the first time the car has been spotted testing on a public road and is accompanied by its primary rival, the Hyundai Elite i20.
Even so, details of the new car are still very much obscured; what is clear now, however, is that the YRA will get a chrome lined grille with a honeycomb design in between. The front of the car bears a striking resemblance to the first-gen Swift, though the YRA will be significantly bigger than the Swift.
Powering the YRA will be the Suzuki’s all new 1.0-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine with segment best fuel economy, while the diesel variants will be offered with the 1.3-litre MultiJet unit. Power will be sent to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission, we can expect Maruti Suzuki to offer the AMT gearbox in top-end variants.
