It is a very well known fact by now that, Maruti Suzuki has made it big by pioneering the AMT (Automatic Manual Transmission) gearbox in India. It is a huge success story which started with the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio which was the first car in India to be sold with an AMT gearbox. It was also the very first car in India, whose auto box equipped variant outsold the Manual gearbox equipped variant, and there has been no looking back for Maruti Suzuki ever since.
Soon, other manufacturers in the Indian market too wanted to equip their cars with the AMT technology and this technology soon became very popular, and it only seemed right that the pioneer of this technology in the Indian market should have the rights to equip other cars of theirs with the same technology.
Maruti Suzuki launched the Alto K10 facelift, and an AMT gearbox was made available on the Alto K10, there were rumors that Maruti Suzuki was going to equip the Ciaz too with AMT technology and now they are looking forward to launch their third car with the AMT gearbox, the WagonR.
The WagonR was India’s first tall boy hatchback and has proven to be a reliable workhorse over the years, and we can find many who will swear by its reliability and practicality in the urban environment. Now, Maruti Suzuki will soon be launching the WagonR with an AMT gearbox to increase the convenience of the buyers who purchase the WagonR.
We had received a confirmation earlier that, the WagonR Stingray will be getting the AMT gearbox, but now a set of spy shots reveal a WagonR Lxi sporting an auto shift badge below the Lxi decal. Now, this is good news to those who are in the market looking for an entry level family car with an automatic gearbox.
It hardly comes as any surprise to us that Maruti Suzuki decided to do this, because the WagonR too is powered by the same engine which also powers the Alto K10 and the Celerio. All three siblings are powered by the same 998cc, 3-cylinder, K10B petrol engine with a maximum power output of 67 BHP and a maximum torque output of 90 NM.
The Magneti Marelli sourced 5-speed AMT is designed to bolt on to this engine block effortlessly, and Maruti Suzuki has done just that, and we commend this. It is a very wise move by Maruti Suzuki and has given consumers more choice within the maruti Suzuki brand. The AMT gearbox equipped variant of the WagonR will be priced at Rs. 40,000 more than the manual gearbox equipped equivalent.
