The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is certainly a favourite amongst the Indians and has a reputation of a very comfortable family car. Maruti has worked well on maintaining the style statement and has improved the looks of the car from the exterior and also have regularly revamped the interior to give it a luxury feel. There is one more variant of the WagonR, the Stingray, which will be the next addition to the small cars by MSIL in the Indian car market.
The sportier looking WagonR was launched in 2007 and is currently sold in the Japanese market, apart from the sportier looks the Stingray also better features than the existing WagonR. While the Japanese Stingray has an automatic transmission, the Indian counterpart of the car will be available with a manual transmission for base models. The car will be sold alongside the existing WagonR. The company hopes to bring back the spice to the small car segment in the Indian market.
Being better also means that the Stingray will be priced above the existing WagonR, although the detail-spec of the India bound hatchback is not known, the exact price is also yet to be decided. There is a good chance that the Stingray will also be powered by the same 1.0-litre K-series petrol engine which is powering most of the Maruti cars in this segment. For now, there are no plans for a WagonR diesel variant, as Maruti Suzuki is still working on the development of a small diesel engine for the compact cars.
The WagonR Stingray is likely to be launched by July or August this-year and speculated to be priced close to the bestselling models such as the Swift hatchback and Swift DZire sedan.
