Diesel engines nowadays are powering a huge volume of cars irrespective of its size. All the car manufacturers have had a diesel variant of whatever type the car is, and some are dedicated to have only diesel powered cars. So it’s clear that diesel is the trend of today’s car market and is certainly going to be there for a long time.
Maruti Suzuki has had a great benefit from its diesel powered cars and grown up to the largest passenger cars manufacturer in the country, thanks to its diesel powered cars. So far all Maruti Suzuki cars are powered by a 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engines supplied by Fiat, in-fact the same engine is used by other cars manufacturers in India for their diesel cars. Looking at ever increasing demand Maruti Suzuki has decided to design and develop its own diesel engine and it will develop not one but two diesel engines, a 1.0-litre and another 1.4-litre diesel engine.
The 1.0-litre can be used in small cars like Wagon R, A-Star, Alto, etc. or in that matter any upcoming car in this segment. Whereas, the 1.4-litre engine will be used in powering cars like the Swift, Ritz, SX4, Desire and Ertiga. The new engines will be launched by the end of 2014. The current agreement between Maruti Suzuki and Fiat is valid till 2015, beyond which Maruti may discontinue using the Fiats 1.3-litre engine.
A diesel engine plant is currently being setup at Gurgaon with an investment of Rs. 1700 crore, which will have a production capacity of 3 lakh units per year. Having an in house diesel engine can also aid Maruti in pricing its diesel cars at even lesser price than the current competition.
Maruti Suzuki has always been there for its buyers and this hold true yet again.
