After some local sightings and a number of teasers on Facebook, Hyundai India has finally launched the i20 Active cross hatch at prices starting from of Rs. 6.38 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Based on the Elite i20 hatch, the i20 Active cross-hatch is about Rs 1.5 lakhs more expensive than Elite i20.
To differentiate the i20 Active from it’s hatchback sibling the car gets a new trapezoidal grille at front, re-designed front bumper and projector headlamps and LED DRLs. On the rear portion it receives a new bumper, circular reflectors and roof spoiler, but continues the same tail gate and tail lamps. The side profile incorporates roof rails, new diamond cut alloy wheels and side skirts. However, the i20 Active does retain the overall shape and profile of the Elite i20, including the equipment list.
On the inside, the interior remains the same to that of the regular Elite i20 hatchback, but it is now a black and blue dual-tone theme. On darker coloured cars, the interiors are black with orange accents. Other features on the i20 Active include a multi-function steering wheel, climate control, cooled glovebox, auto headlamps, sporty aluminum pedals, auto-folding mirrors, an eight-speaker audio system with 1 GB storage and USB/AUX/Bluetooth connectivity.
As far as safety is concerned, the i20 Active gets dual front airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, rear camera, automatic headlamps, electrochromic mirror and rear defogger. The i20 Active is available in 5 variants (2 engine options) and 5 colour options: Earth Brown, Red Passion, Phantom Black, Sleek Silver, and Polar White. The former three get Tangerine Orange interiors, while the latter two gets Aqua Blue interiors.
Under the bonnet sits the familiar a 1.2-litre petrol engine offering 83 PS power and 114 Nm torque and 1.4-litre diesel engine offering 90 PS power and 220 Nm torque mated to 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearbox respectively. Although the engines are same, they are tuned to deliver better acceleration in i20 Active. Thanks to longer final gear ratio, the i20 Active petrol accelerates 6% faster, while the diesel accelerates 11% faster as compared to Elite i20 variants.
The petrol delivers claimed fuel economy of 17.19 kmpl while diesel model delivers 21.19 kmpl. Changes to the i20 Active aren’t just cosmetic, as it features a higher ground clearance of 190mm thanks to the raised suspension. Despite the butch exterior courtesy of a 20 mm increased ride height and additional body cladding, the i20 Active will only be offered with a front-wheel drive layout and automatic transmission will not be available even as an option.
This means its competitors are the likes of the Toyota Etios Cross, Volkswagen Cross Polo and Fiat Avventura.
