Maruti Suzuki India Limited, country’s largest car manufacturer, today launched a new variant of the hugely popular WagonR “Tall Boy” hatchback, called ‘Stingray’ in India at Rs 4.09 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In other words, its a sportier version of the WagonR, but isn’t a replacement rather both will be sold alongside as different models in the country. The Wagon Stingray slots in above the current WagonR.
Compared to the regular WagonR, the WagonR Stingray incorporates a tightly packed chrome grille, first-in-class projector head lamps and the wide air dam. Along the side of the car, you get sporty skirts and blacked out B-Pillar. At the rear, you have a wide chrome bar mentioning the Stingray name and differently styled tail lamps. There are funky alloys on offer as well. Five exterior colours are on offer, Midnight blue (new), Passion red, glistening grey, Superior white and, Silky silver.
On the inside, the Sting Ray gets all-black interiors and a blue-back lit instrumentation cluster. The car also gets a factory fitted audio system with USB and AUX-IN functions while the leather wrapped steering gets audio controls on the VXi variant. Furthermore, it gets a multi-function display that reads out distance-to-empty, average and instant fuel economy figures. The top-end variant VXi (O) gets a driver side power window with one touch operation, tilt steering and electric wing mirrors.
Under the hood, the WagonR Stingray is powered by the same 1.0-litre K10B petrol engine as the regular WagonR. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox, the 1.0-litre engine is capable of churning out the maximum power output of 67bhp. One more thing that would excite everyone is the fuel economy, despite being a sportier and more feature rich version of the WagonR, this too returns the same 20.51kmpl, and this certainly goes in favour of the Stingray over its competitors.
While the regular WagonR is available with CNG-Petrol and LPG-Petrol dual fuel options, these options haven’t yet been made available on the Sting Ray model, which comes in three variants: LXi, VXi and VXi (Option). Bookings for the WagonR StingRay hatchback are open at all Maruti Suzuki showrooms across India.
Commenting at the launch, Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India said –
“With Stingray, we carry forward our focus to make our best sellers even more attractive. The aggressively designed Stingray reinforces the fact that compact cars that are high on utility and reliability can also be premium and stylish. For the younger customers who aspire for a bold and aggressively styled car, the Stingray will be a delightful choice.”
