Amidst all the talk regarding Mahindra buying a 51% stake in Ford Motor India, there is some interesting news. Mahindra recently confirmed that a 7-seater mid-size SUV XUV300 or XUV400 will be on its way to India. The homegrown automaker is expected to launch the vehicle either by end of 2020 or in early 2021.
Codename the S204, this vehicle will be based on the SsangYong Tivoli sold in various markets abroad. The S204 will slot between the XUV500 and the Alturas in Mahindra’s line-up. It will be sharing various bits from Mahindra’s compact SUV, the XUV300.
As per reports, Mahindra may offer the S204 in a 1.5 litre GDI turbo petrol motor. This motor, seen on the SsangYong Korando, produces 163 BHP of power. It will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, with an automatic transmission set to arrive later.
There may be chances of Ford giving their hand in the development of the S204. This would mean that the S204 could also be launched in a Ford badge here later on. The S204, along with the XUV300, could also be sold in European markets as Mahindra wants to make its presence felt there.
On the pricing front, the S204 could be priced reasonably well in order to gain a foothold in an already competitive segment. When launched, the S204 will rival the likes of the MG Hector, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and Renault Duster to name a few. Given Mahindra’s market experience here, we can say that a good offering may be in store for us in the S204.
