We all know that the Jeep Brand was launched in India at the recent Auto expo in Delhi, and we also know that Jeep had earlier announced plans of an entry-level compact SUV, for the European, American and Indian markets. This baby Jeep has been earlier spotted while undergoing testing in Italy, many times. Now the company has unveiled a low cost entry-level variant called ‘Renegade’ at the Geneva Motor Show couple of days ago.
Contrary to rumors, it has now been confirmed by Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne that this compact SUV from Jeep will be called the ‘Renegade’ instead of the rumored ‘Jeepster’ and will hit the market by 2015. Sadly, Fiat India at the launch of new Linea in Mumbai confirmed that the Jeep brand will not be launched anytime soon. The plan to launch Jeep in India has been deferred indefinitely. But we expect that the company will drive in the brand by around late-2014 or early-2015.
Alongside the Jeep Renegade, Fiat will also manufacture the Fiat 500X, which is also a compact SUV and is based on the same platform as the Renegade and Fiat will be bringing both the models to India and are together planning an annual production of up to 2,80,000 units of the two models. These vehicle share its underpinnings with Fiat 500L, boosting a steel monocoque structure architecture. Pulling the Jeep’s compact SUV is the Fiat borrowed Multi-Jet II diesel motors, Multi-Air petrol motors and flex-fuel E.torQ engine matched to two manual transmissions, one dual-clutch DDCT and the aforesaid nine-speed automatic transmission.
The Renegade comes with ‘Trail Rated’ 4X4 badge and rides on 17 inch rubber with all terrain tyres; it is also equipped with Jeep’s ‘Selec-Terrain system’- a terrain selection system. On the inside, the vehicle gets 7 inch fully digital hi-def instrumentation cluster, which displays array of information’s. It also boosts a large screen ‘UConnect’ infotainment system that fulfill all your need from navigation to phones integration and different types of music connectivity. It also comes with Jeep’s ‘My sky’ option in which the sunroof in the Renegade can be completely taken off for full on air experience! It also retracts just like a normal sunroof.
