Hyundai Grand i10 isn’t an updated or facelifted version of an existing Hyundai i10, but is an all-new car from South Korean automobile manufacturer. In an entry-level hatchback segment, Hyundai did not have a premium car to compete against the Maruti Suzuki Swift. With the Grand i10, they no longer have that hole in their portfolio. The Grand i10 has been placed between the older i10 and i20 and is tailor-made for Indian market and roads.
The Grand i10 is based on a completely new platform. The car has been built from scratch by Hyundai’s European design centre in Germany using design cues of Hyundai’s globally acclaimed ‘Fluidic Design’ theme. The Grand i10 is a made for India, and Hyundai engineers from India too have been involved throughout its development.
India is an important market for the Hyundai, thus we see the launch of Grand i10 happening first in our market, and soon the global unveiling will happen at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Hyundai Grand i10 is basically the next-gen 2014 Hyundai i10 for international markets, the India-spec is said to have a larger wheelbase and is longer in length by nearly 100 mm. Also, the rear window glass is larger in the Indian version to give an airy feeling to the passengers.
Like other Hyundai cars, this too features the Hyundai’s fluidic design language but has stronger design lines and an edgier character compared to both the i10 and i20. The Grand i10 provides a good combination of interior space along with quality materials and also has a powerful engine under its hood, thus, will be perfect for those Hyundai car enthusiasts who want a little more features than i10 and want to spend a little less money than they ought to have in case of i20.
The front-fascia of the Grand i10 received some major cosmetic upgrades, with narrower front radiator grille with horizontal chrome slat, bright peeled back front headlamp cluster looks much bigger and more fluidic than its predecessor, but somehow it feels that the design cues have been inspired from Hyundai entry-level-car the Eon. The short bonnet on the Grand i10 looks good too and gives a sporty feel to the hatch.
The side profile of the Grand i10 also looks much different with subtle character lines and mouldings, new stylish roof rails, a sporty compact antenna at rear, electrically folding and adjustable ORVMs with turn indicators, grab-type door handles. New stylish 14-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels, enhances the overall appeal of the car. Come to the rear of the car, you’ll notice the new tail lamps, new curved hatch door with its handle having the Hyundai logo on it, chunky rear spoiler with stop light, twin exhaust pipe and a large curved rear glass.
On the inside, the Grand i10 is lavish and comes with host of comfort and convenience features. The dashboard has been upgraded and it gets a fully equipped dashboard which is finished in Black and Beige color. Step into the cabin and one is amazed by the amount of space on offer. There is enough legroom, knee room, headroom and shoulder room in both the rows. Also the Grand i10, gets a segment first rear AC vent, which is very useful considering our tropical climate. Compared to the 204 ltrs boot space on Maruti Swift, the Grand i10 swallows more of 256.00 ltrs.
The major features adorned in the interiors of Grand i10 includes gear-shift lever on dashboard at the base of center stack, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, push button start/stop, 2-DIN Integrated music system with 1GB internal memory, Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted audio controls, smart key, glove box cooling, electric ORVMs with foldable function, rear parking sensor, rear parcel tray, bottle and cup holders and map pockets for added storage space
Hyundai Grand i10 is launched with two engine options and here comes the interesting part this Grand i10 also has a diesel engine option as well. So let’s talk about the diesel engine first, it’s an 3-cylinder 2nd generation U2 CRDi diesel engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, generates maximum power of 69 bhp with maximum torque of 160 nm. Hyundai claims that the Grand i10 diesel has a best-in-class mileage of 24.0 kmpl (ARAI figure).
The petrol variant comes powered by the all-aluminum 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine that benefits from Dual VTVT mechanism. The car has a maximum power of 80 bhp at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. The petrol engine has a claimed fuel-efficiency of 18.9 kmpl (ARAI figure) and comes matted to a 5-speed manual transmission. An automatic gearbox could also be available as an option later.
As far as safety is concerned, the Grand i10 comes fully equipped with safety features like its elder sibling i20 with Dual Airbags, reinforced body structure and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) that ensures effective braking and prevents possibility of wheel lock-up during panic braking. Other features include engine immobilizer, a smart-key and push-button start combination, fog lamps, rear seat belts, rear wiper and defogger, remote central locking and rear parking sensors.
