SPYSHOTS: Hyundai Elite i20 Cross – premium hatch to ride higher like a crossover

This is the upcoming Hyundai Elite i20 Cross, which is a crossover-based on the recently launched Elite i20 premium hatchback. While auto enthusiast were expecting the ix25 to be launched here to compete with the likes of Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, Hyundai managed to pull the Elite i20 Cross out of nowhere.

As you can see, the Elite i20 Cross has undergone a cosmetic changes on the exterior with projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, plastic cladding on the doors and over the wheel arches, roof rails and newly-designed alloy wheels – it now rides a little higher like an SUV and looks more like a crossover rather than a premium hatch.

Mechanically, the Elite i20 Cross is likely to be identical to the Elite i20. The 1.2-liter petrol and 1.4-liter diesel engines are paired to 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions respectively on the hatch. The launch date also isn’t confirmed but we expect it to happen quite soon and will be priced higher than the Elite i20 by at least Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000.

Crossovers based on hatchbacks are the recent trend with Volkswagen Polo Cross, Toyota Etios Cross and the latest Fiat Avventura all following the same principle.
