If you remember, a couple of months ago we reported that the 2012 is marked as a ‘Year of the MPV’ in the history of Indian car market because Maruti Ertiga has been already launched and there are two MPVs – Nissan Evalia and Chevrolet Enjoy slated to be launched this-year. Competitors are rolling-up their sleeves and if they don’t have a MPV in their portfolio, they are creating them.
As we said last-month, Honda is planning to launch its first compact MPV (codenamed: 2NH), to rival the Maruti Ertiga which will come to light in India by late 2014 or early 2015. But we said that this MPV will be based on the next-gen Jazz platform. Now sources close to us say the three-row, seven-seater MPV will be based on the stretched Brio platform. Honda will give new MPV a new look which would be different from Brio and it is not the first time that Honda has used Brio platform for developing a car.
Earlier also Honda has planned to use Brio platform to develop a sedan based. The car lovers will have to wait to see that how many other cars from Honda would be developed from Brio. But, Honda has not yet revealed its other plans about its presence in India. But, it is certain that Honda Brio MPV will soon be launched in India to capture its share in the Indian market.
Considering that it could still be a couple of years before the Brio based MPV could become production ready, expect both petrol as well as diesel engine options to be available to power this MPV. Currently, Honda has officially confirmed that it will build a Brio-based MPV in Indonesia without giving away intricate details. It will be produced at Honda’s new plant in Jakarta, Indonesia, alongside the Brio, from 2014.
As the car has the hardware of the Honda Brio, the prices of the MPV could be quoted below Rs. 10 Lakhs. If Honda wishes to compete with Maruti, it has to make sure that the lowest variant of the car has to be priced at around Rs. 6 lakhs. Meanwhile, thanks to our good friend from Malaysia Mr. Theophilus Chin for the rendered image of the upcoming Brio-based MPV.
