Ferrari has sold its 999th vehicle in China, and celebrated its latest customer with a glitzy ‘multimedia show’ on the main river-way that runs through Shanghai. It seems odd for such hoopla to surround a 999th sale instead of a 1000th sale, but in China, the number 999 is a celebrated one. The number nine – ‘jiu’ – is said to symbolize longevity and excellence, and is celebrated thoroughly in the country.
“For Ferrari, China represents the present and the future,” said Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa. “It is a great country where we continue to invest. I’m convinced that in a couple of years, we’ll reach sales of 500 cars per year, a number equal to established European markets.”
The celebration started with a show of more than 15 Ferraris in front of the Oriental Pearl Tower before a backdrop of dramatic illuminations, a giant screen depicting great moments on Ferrari history, and a fireworks display. The evening concluded with a gala dinner attended by 999th Chinese customer Johnson Zhang.
