Like the Nissan Terrano, Datsun today revealed sketches giving a preview of its new generation Datsun model after 32 years which will make its world debut on July 15th in New Delhi, this debut also marks the return of the Datsun brand which Nissan is re-launching after it was axed in 1986. This is one major event for Nissan to increase their share in Asia’s third largest auto market.
The first new-generation Datsun model is a five-seater hatchback codenamed K2. This vehicle will compete with small cars essentially Maruti Suzuki A-Star, Wagon-R, Chevrolet Spark, and Hyundai Eon among others. It is designed for markets like India, Russia, Indonesia and South Africa and aimed at a highly aspirational middle class that is fast embracing car ownership.
With premium styling, the new Datsun K2 model is expected to be priced between Rs. 3-4 lakh, when it goes on sale in mid-2014. Besides platform, it will also share the Nissan Micra 1.2-litre three cylinder engine in a different state of tune with possibly a higher fuel economy. The K2 is being developed at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai technical facility.
On the inside to ensure maximum space, the new K2 could sport a bench like seat in the front capable of seating three persons while wheels are pushed out to the maximum adding to extra shoulder room as door structures are pushed outwards as well. The boot is expected to be quite spacious thanks to an extended floor which will allow large bags to be kept flat rather than vertical.
“Datsun will bring competitive products and services, modern and aspirational, while at the same time reassuring, providing superior value and specifically developed for the emerging and ambitious new Middle Class in high-growth markets. The Datsun cars will be locally developed with the support of Nissan Motor Company engineers and stylists and will be locally produced”, said Vincent Cobee, Head of Datsun.
