General Motors under the Chevrolet brand has applied for patent of the production version of the Chevrolet Niva Concept in Russia, which will directly compete against the Ford EcoSport.
The Niva SUV debuted as the Chevrolet Niva Concept at the Moscow International Automobile Salon in late August 2014. The production version of the Niva SUV is expected to hit showrooms in Russia by sometime-2016.
The Niva seen in the patent leaked pictures is essentially the production version of the concept SUV of the same name that was showcased last-year and seems to be almost identical apart from the large wheels that were on the concept. It is basically the Lada Niva that has been on-sale in Russia for over a decade.
Chevrolet has had a pretty good history with regard to popular models, but they always make the mistake of not launching it in India. Case in point is, the Chevrolet Malibu. Codenamed internally as GEM-B SUV, the production-spec Chevrolet Niva is likely to make its way into India with both petrol and diesel engines.
In India, as per unconfirmed reports the Chevrolet Niva SUV will debut in early-2017.
